The Government’s Every Child Matters’ strategy aims to improve outcomes for all children and young people. The Government believes that communities can make a real difference to improving opportunities for children and young people. The Local Network Fund for children and young people (LNF) is a programme of the Department for Children, schools and Families (DCFS). The object of the Fund is to enable communities to develop projects and activities for children and young people with limited opportunities or access to services that many young people take for granted.

Since 2003 the LNF in this area has met real need within communities. The LNF has been a positive experience for both the young people and local communities by filling funding gaps and supporting groups to deliver projects

The Fund has aimed to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people by supporting local community groups with grants of £250 - £7,000 to run projects which enabled children and young people to reach their full potential.

Since spring 2003 the Local Network Fund has awarded over £1.85 million to deserving groups in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Over 400 local and community groups have received on average £4,523 to run their projects. Many of these are new groups who are now sustainable and have secured funding from other sources.

Approximately, 50,000 children and young people aged 0 – 19 have benefited from LNF funded projects in our area alone.

More than 150 projects have enabled children and young people to express their opinions and contribute to policies and services on issues that concern them.

Applications were invited under the five Every Child Matters themes;
  • Being Healthy

  • Staying Safe

  • Enjoying and Achieving

  • Making a Positive Contribution

  • Achieving Economic Well-being
